It's Anchorvale CC Toastmasters Club 200th Chapter Meeting!

The long-awaited day has finally arrived. It is 10th September 2022. It is the Anchorvale CC Toastmasters Club’s 200th Chapter Meeting! It was a tremendous privilege and an honour to have that opportunity to witness and participate in this enthralling occasion.

It was a bright and sunny day. The sun shone brilliantly in the clear, blue sky. Committee members arrived at the meeting venue ahead of time to decorate the conference room and to ensure the right hardware is properly set up to enhance the experience for both the "Zoomies" and "Roomies". Members and guests were greeted with beautiful decorations to start off the celebration at Anchorvale Community Club, 3rd floor conference room (Falcon).

Gracious and pleasant, our Sergeant-at-Arms of the Day, Jennifer Lim, IP3, who is also doubled up as the Toastmaster of the Day, started the meeting with the ice breaker and introduction session.

After which, Our Club President, Venkat Voleti, PM3 made an eloquent opening address and welcomed everyone with open arms.

Coming up next was the presentation of Historical Moment of Anchorvale CC Toastmasters Club. Zoom-Master, Siva Kuma, PM5, presented 10 years (year 2010 – 2020) milestone video montage nicely produced by past Club President, Valliappan Selvamani, CC, CL, PM1, and introduced member of Exco and events held from year 2021 – 2023.

Following the journey story was the Knowledge Moment. We are delighted to have the opportunity to invite a Senior Lecturer from a University in Australia to provide us an enriching learning session - Crafting the speech. She loves travelling and meeting people, learning, and sharing culture through food. She is an angel in disguise, known as a person with a kind heart, a person who is always ready to help others. She is none other than Lee Buckley, DTM.

She shared her experience of crafting a speech. In year 2020, she came across a fellow trainer in Sydney who shared the secret of how to craft a speech in 30 minutes. She mentioned that crafting a speech is different from writing a speech, crafting is a process when you set the foundation, when you think of the ideas and put them together in your speech.

A few tips were shared by Lee Buckley to ensure that toastmasters can craft a speech with aplom:

  1. Speech content. Where do I get stories from? E.g., holidays, travelling, family, work, friends – keep all the life events in your “piggy bank of stories”.
  2. Every speech should have a general and specific purpose.
    • General purpose: Entertain, Inform, Inspire, Motivate, Persuade
    • Specific purpose: What do you want the audience to do after listening to your speech
  3. Define the message, list down 3 key points, know your audience, do your research, plan your story, internalise your presentation, connect with the audience, and solidify connections made.
Imagine writing a great speech starts with the skeleton, then elaborate on the vital organs (pick 3 of them!), connect the arteries, make the conclusion, think of an introduction, decide the speech title at the end and, Voila.

It is important to understand the theory behind the workshop, but surely it is even more important that it can put that learning into practice. Madhushika Munasinghe resonated happy ball, cry ball with herself. She mentioned that it is perfectly okay to cry if she feels like need to cry. Expressing her emotions through crying can be very soothing and feels much better than hiding them away or pretending she is okay when she is not. Her speech title was “Don’t cry. No. I cry.” Next, the Club President, Venkat Voleti shared about how AVCC successfully planned and executed the 200th Meeting celebration and his speech title was “Blue and Gold”.

Addition to Knowledge Moment, Marc Wong, DL5, PM1, has carefully handpicked the English game, via Mentimeter. Here were the words and definitions:
  • What is a Pangram? A sentence using every letter of a given alphabet at least once. E.g., A quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
  • How does the saying “Great minds think alike…” end? But fools rarely differ.
  • Which Singlish word is NOT found in Oxford English Dictionary? Chope.
  • When do you describe some a Mouse Potato? A person who spends a great deal of time using a computer.
  • The dot over the letter “i” is officially known as a? Tittle.

Next was the World game:

  • Which is the smallest country (by area) in the World? Vatican City
  • Which is the tallest building in the World? UAE - Burj Khalifa
  • Which country is the biggest island in the World? Greenland
  • Which country is known as the “Playground of Europe”? Switzerland
  • Which is the most stolen food in the World? Cheese

2nd part of the game was Charades. Marc mentioned that this game allows us to demonstrate our nonverbal communication i.e., body language and body gesture other than the direct/verbal communication.

Here was the performance by our talented members and guests.

The games were great. We had a ball.

Next up on the menu was cake cutting ceremony, followed by photo taking sessions.

The afternoon continued with Talent Moment.

Club Mentor, Jenny Au, DTM, presented a graceful and elegant Tai-ji performance with smooth movements. Valliappan Selvamani, CC, CL, PM1 sang a Tamil song "Mustafa Mustafa – Friendship", the song represents the friendship and journey he has with Anchorvale CC TMC. Sarah Ong, IP2 took us a trip down memory lane to school days with a Chinese song "小幸运 – A Little Happiness". Last but not least, Rusman Hadijanto, CTM, CC, DL5, PI4 said that Anchorvale CC TMC feels like a home and family to him, and the song said it all "Kaulah Segalanya – Say You Will Always Be Mine".

Time flies when you are having fun. Ends are not bad things; they just mean that something else is about to begin. And there are many things that do not really end, anyway, they just begin again in a new way. Ends are not bad, and many ends are not really an ending; some things are never-ending.

The 200th chapter meeting and celebration ended with closing remarks by Club President - shared his heartfelt appreciation to committee members, master of ceremonies, workshop speaker, members, and guests.

Here is the 1-min clip of the 3 hours footage. Enjoy!

On 29 June 2019, Anchorvale CC Toastmasters Club had its annual Teambuilding Meeting cum Exco Installation.

Our Immediate Past President 2018/2019 Wee Chee Sian was preparing the room

The meeting was started by Immediate Past President 2018/2019 Wee Chee Sian to share on Annual General Meeting for his CEO term in 2018/2019.

After the AGM, Chee Sian congratulate the Immediate ExCo and Team Members by presented award-winning prizes to Immediate ExCo 2018/2019 Valliappan, Rusman, and Alice (unfortunately other ExCo were not available to attend this meeting), and Team members Achievement in completing their Pathways within the year 2019: Level 1 (Sarah), Level 2 (Andy), and Level 3 (Rusman)

Members Award Winning 2019 announcement prior ExCo Installation

After this AGM, we were enjoying food refreshment and celebrated the June's birthday babies, we were all wishing to still be a baby :)

Once we have made our stomach happy :),

We have the distinct honour to have Raymond Zhang, Area A4 Director Elect 2019/2020 to conduct our Club's incoming EXCO 2019/2020 installation.

Raymond began the installation by thanking the outgoing Exco members for their valuable contributions. In the 2018-2019 term, Raymond visited Anchorvale CC Toastmasters Club thrice, including this visit. He has always been impressed by the quality of speakers in this club, but more importantly, the camaraderie of the club members. It was very clear to him that that the members are a close-knit family, and whenever he visited, He is always felt at home with the Anchorvale CC Toastmasters team wonderful hospitality.

Raymond then went on to install each of the exco members by reading out their roles and responsibilities, and behind every “I will”, it was evident that they are very committed to serve Anchorvale CC Toastmasters Club to the best of their abilities and to overcome any challenges that come along their way.

The evening continued with three fun games- “It’s All About You”, Charades, and “Three of a Kind”.

Hilda Xie, the incoming Vice President Education, hosted the segment “It’s All About You”. It was a series of very interesting Table Topics set by her, whereby participants had to pull out the question from the envelope. The questions were all one word long, and they were all intricately designed by Hilda. We all had a great time reflecting on the various aspects of our lives!

Freya in action to performed her table topic impromptu speech

Sarah Ong and Yuen Cheok Pui hosted the charades segment. The living room was divided into two teams and each team had to send ‘actors’ to ‘act’ out the phrases to the audience in our team for them to guess what it was. All ‘actors’, including myself, amused the audience as we struggled to depict various words and phrases. Indeed, we are all blessed with a mouth to be able to articulate our thoughts well, and it is only through this game, that we realise that our tongues are indeed, very powerful when it comes to communication!

Winners of actors to act games

The last game, “Three of a Kind”, was hosted by outgoing President Chee Sian and Freya Gwee. Participants were each given three words, and they had to do an impromptu speech (of any genre), 1-2 minutes long, using these three words. To win the game, the audience must be unable to guess these three words within three attempts. We all had a great time trying to string a story with these three words, and of course, peppering some drama and creative juices to make the stories as fictional as possible.

The night culminated with a BBQ party. I saw many members of the club, working tirelessly just to cook food so that we all could enjoy a hearty meal. I had a great time in the living room, chatting with various members, catching up with them on Toastmasters happenings and even on Anchorvale CC Toastmasters Club itself. I could see everyone was enjoying themselves amidst the celebratory and relaxed mood.

Here was the feedback from Raymond Zhang, Area A4 Director, District 80, 2019-2020 as he has closely witnessed the Team Building and performed the ExCo Installation for Anchorvale CC Toastmasters club:

AGM + EXCO Installation + Teambuilding Meeting

The scent of fresh rain in the air and the tranquil ambience at the Cherry loft resort, were perfect ingredient to set fire to yet another wonderful Chalet retreat of Anchorvale CC toastmasters club.

On 30th of June, 18, exactly 8 years after the installation of the Club, the members of the club gathered together to witness the AGM and EXCO installation.

The fun session began with Annual general meeting in which our dearest President (Now Immediate Past President) gave a brief on the annual report and the financial status of the club. She further expressed some of her concerns and struggles for the upcoming executive committee and opened the forum for everyone to express their opinion. Members gave some feedback and solutions especially on the Pathway programs.

The annual general meeting was followed by new executive committee installation which was done by Division Director
Every officer took the gavel in their hands with great vigor and took the oath to serve the club with the best of their ability.
The new executive committee members:-
President - Chee Sian

VPE1 - Rusman
VPE2 - Valliappan
VPM1 - Narayana Rao
VPM2 - Audrey Lim
VPPR - Deepthi
Secretary - Mano
Treasurer - Alice Ow
SAA - Sajith Kumar
IPP - Salma

The new office bearers where handed over a beautiful lapel pin, leadership manual and also surprise gifts by Jenny.

Soon after the EXCO installation the members had a quick refreshment break and recharged themselves for the most awaited fun games. The first game was organized by Muthu. The game was called Bingo and the purpose of the game was to mingle with each other and get to know each member’s unique character. Valli was the winner for this segment.

Next game was organized by Jenny and it was as a “fruit hunt”. There were two teams: - MIT and Harvard. Each team had few “blind players”, few “guiding players”, a timer and a distracter. The game taught us the importance of giving correct direction and how to work together as a team. Both the teams got presents for taking part with good sportsman spirit.

The next segment was all about unusual table topics and the again members were divided into two teams. One team was supposed to be pessimistic about the topic while the other team was supposed to speak optimistically about the topic. Members spoke with lot of gusto, especially everyone was awestruck to hear Jeff’s son speaking with lot of confidence and energy.

After this segment, Salma gave her signing off speech and thanked the Past EXCO for their commendable work. She handed over small token of appreciation to the team. Chee Sian handed over a beautiful token of thanks to Salma for being the “soul of the club” and for taking the club to great heights.

Finally it was time for grilling! Members headed towards the barbeque pit to fill their tummies and warm their hearts with yummy food. Few members with their art of barbecuing set the air with the incense of grill. Members enjoyed the delicious BBQ and felt rejuvenated with the delicacies and ambience of celebration.

The chalet retreat was indeed a nostalgic experience.
