This is exactly what our charismatic and handsome Toasmaster of the Day Mr. Vicky whooped out during our meeting. Everyone flabbergasted and laugh but i knew something deep inside each one of us were asking how did he managed to look young. Did he found the secret fountain of youth, the elixir of life or maybe his awesomely shaved head was still possessed by a lingering hangover which is why he lamented those words.
This is our first chapter meeting of the year which was held last Saturday, 27th January 2018.
The New Year offers a bright and shiny opportunity to all of us at Anchorvale TMC because we had a great mix of 7 prepared speeches to start the year. Something special about Anchorvale TMC is the number of guests we always have coming over for our meetings – true to this homely spirit, we had the honor of hosting visiting Toastmasters Aaron Ting and with several new comers as well to liven up the atmosphere!
Mr. Vicky wasted no time energizing the crowd with his quick witted comments and hilarious opening lines. He started the meeting by requesting everyone to introduce themselves and to share their secret for staying young at heart which everyone positively expressed their feelings and whimsical opinions.
Afterwards our sweet & sultry President Salma gave the opening address and encourage everyone continuously improve and make a positive impact to society. She challenged everyone to be the 84 year old grandma who never stopped learning and achieving greatness by becoming a riffle shooting champion. She solemnly solicited that wrinkles should not appear in our hearts, which made Norman teary eyed.
Our Language Evaluator for the afternoon, Muthu, CC, CL. He encouraged us to use the word of the day – WEAPON. He gave a stern reminder to the members that he will be looking out for flowery usage of the English language and everyone were definitely on their toes hoping to impress this awesome language evaluator!
Anchorvale TMC were in for a treat as they were delighted with a buffet of prepared speeches:
1. Deepthi - "My Toastmasters Journey"
2. Srinivasan - "My Icebreaker"
3. Hemant - "What Do You Think"
4. Jeff - "My Reflection on How to Build Oneself"
5. Helena - "New Year Resolution"
6. Owen - "The Elixir of Life"
7. Chee Sian - "Igniting the Sparks Within"
Inspiration, Life Tips, Moral Lessons, Humour, we had it all! It was an oratorical delight that made the Saturday afternoon absolutely awesome!
Following the end of the prepared speech segment, a short refreshment break gave us the opportunity to mingle with the guests while at the same time bingeing on the yummy pizzas, fruits and cakes together with the January birthday celebrants.
The project evaluations segment came right after our refreshment break. Valliappan, Aaron, Weite, Ricky, Salma, Norman and Sathiya gave their opinions on the respective prepared speech speakers. Even for the rest of us, their evaluations educated us on how to make our future speeches better.
Finally came the interesting and adrenaline inducing table topics segment! Our table topics master, Narayana, prepared such an array of interesting questions that we could talk about, all of which were “New Year-Themed”. Here are some of the table topics picked during the meeting so you can try practicing at your own comfort:
1. I love new year celebration but I hate new year...
2. I love new year but I hate the celebration...
3. If you can change new year, what date would it be?
4. If your life is a movie, what will be the title?
5. If you're already perfect, what would still be your new year's resolution?
While all those who took up the challenge clearly impressed us in many ways, it was an impressive performance by a first timer in our club, Manjith – Congratulations!
It was the language evaluator’s turn to glitter as he was jotting down impressive uses of language throughout the meeting. Muthu, CC, CL commended everyone for successfully using the word of the day repeatedly. I could never forget what he shared to us - "If you cannot have a good language, you cannot have a good thoughts", bravo!
Our dearest mentor DTM Jenny Au general evaluation was impeccable with specific suggestions to each speaker, evaluators and everyone who generously shared their time and talent to this wondrous event. Another great meticulous evaluation from my co-founder, well done gurl!
Special thanks to our appointment holders for the day specially to Marice and Kanagavelu. Also to our visiting Toastmasters for their support as well as guests who bravely came down. We hope you had an enjoyable time and we definitely hope to see everyone again!
